Mathematics K-12

Warwick's mathematics instruction, K-12, is focusing on increasing student mathematical discourse in all classrooms across the district.

We are committed to creating mathematic classrooms where students ...

  • Do the thinking

  • Progress content using the CRA model:

    • Concrete - Representational - Abstract

  • Participate in more challenging problems, both individually and collaboratively

  • Apply problem-solving to real-world

    scenarios

  • Use multiple approaches, that have been modeled, to solve a problems

  • Are encouraged to communicate their thinking in various ways

  • Participate in instruction designed for high student engagement - through discussion and demonstration

  • Provided choice in process and product

  • Met where they are and strategic supports are provided for all learners on their pathway to grade-level learning

  • Reflect on learning

  • Communicate thinking and ideas

Effective Mathematical Practices:

As a district, we are working on developing student discourse across all grade levels and content areas. This work is anchored in the NCTM's Effective Teaching Practices. In grades K-8, we use these teacher actions to activate student application of Math Practices. Teachers are encouraged to focus on "Facilitate Meaningful Mathematical Discourse" and "Pose Purposeful Questions" in their practice.
