Welcome to Warwick's English Language Arts (ELA) Department

power of reading

ELA Mission

Warwick Public School students will be creative and reflective citizens of the 21st century who demonstrate character when thinking critically and working collaboratively and are active members of the community in which they live and learn. All students are empowered with the understanding that reading is their pathway to knowledge and gaining a global perspective.

In addition:

  • Students will become self-directed learners, accessing the tools and strategies they need to read critically, build arguments, and cite evidence

  • Students will communicate effectively using multiple methods, media, and context to share ideas and information clearly; seek and use feedback to adapt ideas and implement decisions through continuous reflection, respect divergent thinking, and engage others in thoughtful discussion

  • Students will apply critical thinking skills and innovative problem-solving strategies to apply and connect their academic and worldly knowledge and skills to new learning

  • Students will gain confidence by mastering the content and engaging in the habits of thinking and work of the discipline by using meaningful, authentic, and complex texts at the heart of nearly every lesson

  • Through reading, students will build their knowledge of the world, gain confidence and resilience with challenging texts and develop the critical thinking skills and vocabulary necessary for long-term success

  • Students will be encouraged to be dedicated, continuous learners who graduate with college and career readiness, and ultimately with the skills to be empowered and informed citizens in society
