Attendance & Chronic Absenteeism

Coming to school every day matters for our students! We know from research that students who are chronically absent have lower achievement, disengaged from school, course failures, and are at an increased risk of dropping out. Chronic absenteeism is defined as missing 10% or more of school days during the year. Excused and unexcused absences can add up. Only 2 missed days per month doesn't seem like a lot, however, it can cause a child to fall off track and struggle to regain missed instructional time. Research also tells us that we can predict which students are at risk of chronic absenteeism by their attendance during the month of September.

Schools are working hard to make differences by taking a whole child approach. Here are some ways that Attendance Matters takes a 3 tier approach.
