We have passed the midpoint of the school year and I am happy to say that a majority of the senior class has made tremendous progress with their senior project and senior papers. Many students have reluctantly embraced this new concept and a tremendous amount of work is being produced. I am extremely proud of this senior class. I realize that this new graduation requirement has been pushed on them for the first time, but they are starting to respond in a positive manner.

I would like to congratulate Mr. McGair as our new graduation by proficiency (GBP) coordinator. Mrs. Wilkinson decided to take a guidance counselor position at Gorton Jr. High School. I thank her for her efforts and wish her well. Mr. McGair has been an outstanding science teacher at Warwick Veterans for many years. He wanted to branch out into a new area and we are grateful to have him in the GBP position. Seniors will give an 8-10 minute oral presentation on their senior project to a panel of 5-8 people. The final draft for the senior research paper in English is due on March 28th. Seniors will present their exhibition projects to a group of Vets teachers and community members on May 20th.  If have any questions or concerns regarding the senior project, you may email Mr. McGair at mcgairc@warwickschools.org.

Many parents received a ConnectED automated message from Dr. Mercurio, Director of Secondary Education, regarding the eportfolio requirements for graduation. I have received many concerned phone calls about this issue. Downloading assignments in the eportfolio is something that your student’s teachers will be doing with them.  Currently, we are in the process of training all of our teachers in the eportfolio system.  We will be guiding our students through this process.

The latest NECAP test scores were released by the Rhode Island Department of Education. The current junior class was tested in October 2007. We faired pretty well in reading and writing. Our math scores are a concern. This is a state wide trend as well. We are in the process of developing our school improvement plan that will hopefully address the issue of the math NECAP test scores.
