Text Box: PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Last year, we started a student recognition program called “Students of the Quarter”. This was the brainchild of two teachers, Mrs. Rix and Mr. Sollitto. All teachers have the opportunity to nominate a student of the quarter. We try to recognize the good things that our students do in our school. The students of the first quarter are as follows: Kelsey Bell, Angela Campbell, Brianna Carrington, Katherine Chanco, Matthew Conroy, Ashley Cucinella, Gibson Delguidice, Ryan Deslauriers, Nicole Dodd, Tabitha Eisenberger, Katherine Flanagan, Zachary Harris, Kayla Keough, Dean Maloney, Jonathan Maloney, Melanie Machete, Marie-Louise Reineke, and Rebecca Santagata. These students receive a nice certificate and they have their picture taken with the Principal.

The mentor forms for senior project are long past due. Finding a mentor might be difficult for some kids. Your child should see Mrs. Wilkinson in D101 for help in this area. If you are expecting your child to graduate in June, it is important for each senior to meet the deadline dates for their senior exhibition project. These dates can be found on our web page at warwickschools.org and the icon for the new high school graduation requirements. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the senior project, you may also email our graduation by proficiency coordinator, Mrs. Wilkinson, at wilkinsonr@warwickschools.org.

I also want to recognize some of our special teachers. We have four teachers who earned their National Board certification. This gives Warwick Veterans the highest number of teachers in the Warwick Public School System who have received this incredible accomplishment. This is a very difficult task. I would like to congratulate Eric Simonian (math), Jeff Lawton (English), Julie Petitbon (English), and Liz Noren (English) for becoming Nationally Board certified.

To stay with the theme of recognizing special acts, we have three students who recently initiated a special act of kindness. Katherine Chanco, Nicole Dodd, and Lauren Harvey raised money to help the families of the two students from Chariho High School who tragically lost their lives. After raising $370, they delivered a check to the school. The Chariho community Text Box: was truly touched. I have received numerous phone calls and letters from members of the Chariho School Department. They were emotionally moved by our caring students. It is times like this that just proves what I always say to anyone who will listen, “We have great kids at Warwick Veterans”.

Family & Consumer Science

Second Quarter has marked a busy time for the students in Family Consumer Science classes. Child Development students said their sad goodbyes to the Little Canes Preschools. This proved to be a positive experience for all. Trips were taken to Roger Williams Park Zoo and the Mystic Aquarium.

The Community Service Learning classes raised $1484.00 for local causes by raking and bagging leaves for the elderly. A portion of the money purchased holiday gifts for teens in DCYF care. Toiletries were alos provided for impoverished Warwick Senior Citizens. Further donations were made to West Bay Community Action emergency fund.

    English Department

During the second quarter, the English Department was technology happy because a Veterans Education grant and the stipends for the RI Teachers and Technology Initative (RITTI) came to fruition. The SmartBoards for Dr. Hainey-Turcotte, Ms. Elizabeth Noren, and Mr. Fred Mossberg were installed, and the accompanying computers upgraded. All three have been in constant use by those teachers, and they are available for other teachers as well. In addition , Mr. and Mrs. Rix, both English teachers, share a classroom where they too have a SmartBoard because they participated in the (RITTI) summer workshop the previous year. Further, there are a number of SmartBoards in other parts of the building, such as the social studies
