History:

Potowomut School is located in the Potowomut section of Warwick, Rhode Island, lying across Cowesett Bay, south of Warwick Neck and between the towns of East Greenwich and North Kingstown. The Forge Road runs across this strip of land. Southwest of this road, about one third of Potowomut consists of a broad plain extending from Post Road to the Potowomut River. On the other side of the road is Potowomut Neck, a peninsula formed by Greenwich Cove, Cowesett Bay and Green's River.

When Potowomut School first opened in approximately 1929 it was dedicated as Nathanael Greene School of Potowomut. Tradition tells us that Potowomut was the favorite hunting ground of the Narragansett Indians. Its name signifies "land of fires" and it is probable that beacon fires often lighted the sky above this small neck of land long before the coming of the European explorers and later settlers.

Presently, Potowomut School houses approximately 200 students. The school is often referred to as "Warwick's Hidden Treasure" because of its excellent educational reputation and individual attention given to all students.

School Hours: 8:40a.m. - 2:50p.m.
