Our Mission:
The mission of Hoxsie School is to provide, in partnership with parents and the community, a safe, secure, and nurturing educational environment that prepares students to meet the educational, social, emotional, and cognitive challenges of the future.

Our History:

Hoxsie Elementary School was named in honor of Cottrell F. Hoxsie, a prominent Warwick agriculturist who lived in the late nineteenth century. In 1926, the first Hoxsie School was built on the location that presently houses the Warwick School Department Administration Building. In 1969, a new Hoxsie School was constructed on Glenwood Drive. In 1998, an addition was added to this structure to include two new classrooms and the Hoxsie Kindergarten program. In 2006, a second addition was added to provide another two classrooms and a conference room.  Today, Cottrell F. Hoxsie Elementary School educates children from Kindergarten through grade six in nineteen classrooms and enrolls approximately 325 students.

Our Home-School Connection

Hoxsie Elementary School receives Title I funds through the federal legislation called No Child Left Behind.  These funds are used at Hoxsie Elementary School to support reading instruction for qualifying children in Kindergarten through Grade 3.  Throughout the school year children will bring home various publications that we hope will strengthen the home-school connection.  The Title I Activity Calendar, Parents Make the Difference Activity Calendar and the Home & School Connection are a few examples.  The activity calendar provides daily suggestions of interesting, fun activities for you and your child.  Parent only and parent/child workshops are held at the Title I Family Center located at Oakland Beach School Information concerning these workshops can be found in the Title I Activity Calendar.  I hope that you will participate in the workshops that are offered throughout the school year.

The No Child Left Behind legislation also provides that as a parent of a student at Hoxsie Elementary School, you have the right to know the professional qualifications of the classroom teachers who instruct your child.  Federal law allows you to ask for certain information about your child’s classroom teacher, and requires us to give you this information in a timely manner if you ask for it.  Specifically, you have the right to ask for the following information about each of your child’s classroom teachers:

·    Whether the Rhode Island Department of Education has licensed the teacher for the grades and subjects he or she teaches.

·    Whether the Rhode Island Department of Education has decided that the teacher can teach in a classroom without being licensed under state regulations because of special circumstances, that the teacher has an “emergency” license.

·    The teacher’s college major; whether the teacher has any advanced degrees; and if so, the subject of the degrees.

·    Whether a teacher assistant provides services to your child and, if they do, their qualifications.

If you would like to receive any of this information, please call Dr. Colleen Mercurio at
