I’d like to ask you to join me in welcoming our new assistant principal, Mr. David Alba.  Welcome aboard!!

At Gorton Junior High School we have been trying to be more responsive to our community needs by reaching out to our parents and others in various ways.  We have had two canned food drives and a coat drive through our Student Council (Mr. Steve Andolfo, advisor).  We collected donations from our generous faculty and staff enabling us to distribute twenty Thanksgiving baskets to our families.  Mrs. Murgo who handled most of the Thanksgiving work has photos on her webpage: http://www.warwickschools.org/gorton/foods.htm

We are currently working on distributing grocery gift cards for December holiday meals and just finished helping two Eagle Scout candidates (one with collecting eyeglasses and one collecting food donations).

This past Tuesday, December 15, our second quarter interims went home. These progress reports provide the opportunity to turn things around if need be or just to inform you of your child’s academic performance in his/her classes.  Please contact your child’s teachers or guidance counselor if you have any questions or have not seen this report.

Our School Improvement Team (SIT) meets monthly in order to establish goals to make your child’s educational experience as personalized and motivating as possible.    Three intervention groups have been created to support struggling students as they work to get back on track.

Our SIT also meets to examine testing data from past years in order to look at where we’ve been, where we are and then create our goals for the year as to where we’d like to be.

Our goals will include:

Ø     Increasing student achievement
Ø     Closing achievement gaps between our general education and special education student populations
Ø     Examining our mission statement to decide what our focus should be and what we want for our school community
Ø     Improving the personalization process

Increasing the amount of parent participation is important to us.  Please know that you are invited to participate on our School Improvement Team and/or our Parent Teacher Organization (we have an excellent PTO here at Gorton Junior High School with Mr. Mark Banno as our president). Your input is welcome and essential to the educational process.  Feel free to contact us if we can help you or if you feel that you can help us.

Have a wonderful holiday and a happy and healthy new year!

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at 734-3350 between 7:00am and 4:00pm or e-mail me at pelletierj@warwickschools.org
